IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 (WPC2014) was held from 12-19 Nov 2014 in Sydney, Australia. WPC is the most important international conference associated with sharing knowledge of environmental protection and sustainability, and it’s held once every ten years. WPC2014 was jointly hosted by IUCN, WCPA and Australian government, and the theme was "Parks, people, planet: inspiring solutions". More than 5,000 delegates from 160 countries, regions and international organizations participated this event, including Dr. Zhi WANG, Mr. Wanggu XU, and Dr. Daqing ZHOU from Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences, Ministry of Environmental Protection (NIES).
During the communication with other delegates around the world, they introduced the current situation and research focuses of NIES and Research Center for Nature Conservation and Biodiversity, and acquired advanced experience and developing trends of management, policies and methodologies for nature conservation, which would greatly improve the management of nature reserves in China. Dr. WANG presented a report named “Evaluating conservation effectiveness of national nature reserves in China, 2000-2010” in the stream of “Reaching Conservation Goals”.
WPC2014 announced the first 23 protected areas which were elected in the “IUCN Green List of Well Managed Protected Area”, including 6 protected areas in China. In addition, the congress formed The Promise of Sydney, which appealed to governments, international organizations, NGOs, communities and companies to concern and participate in nature conservation and biodiversity.
