The Key Laboratory of Soil Environment Management and Pollution Control is one of the important disciplines for scientific and technological innovation of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Targeting China's soil environment problems and the forefront of international soil environmental science development, it conducts forward-looking and strategic research on application theory and practical technology related to soil pollution prevention and control, with soil environment safety as the core, to provide scientific decision-making basis and technical support for national soil environmental protection. The laboratory was officially launched in 2008 with the approval of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and passed the acceptance in 2011. Its assessment results in 2018 and 2022 were both excellent.
Soil science is one of the traditional advantageous disciplines of the institute. As early as 1982, the institute began research on soil environmental background values, soil environmental quality standards, soil pollution prevention and control, the safety evaluation and pollution prevention of fertilizers and pesticides on the ecological environment, and other aspects, and compiled China's first soil environmental quality standard (GB15618-1995). Since 2012, as the deputy group leader of the legislative research on soil pollution prevention and control, it has participated in the formulation of the Management Measures for Soil Environmental Management of Polluted Sites (Trial) and the Management Measures for Soil Environmental Management of Agricultural Land (Trial), providing important technical support for the promulgation of the Soil Pollution Prevention and Control Law and the Action Plan for Soil Pollution Prevention and Control (State Council [2016] No. 31). It formulated and issued China's first soil pollution risk control standard, the Soil Environmental Quality Standard-Risk Control for Soil Pollution of Agricultural Land (Trial) (GB 15618-2018) and the Soil Environmental Quality Standard-Risk Control for Soil Pollution of Construction Land (Trial) (GB36600-2018).
The laboratory's researchers are divided into three parts: fixed personnel, visiting personnel, and graduate students. The Key Laboratory has 70 fixed scientific research personnel and 21 visiting personnel, including 29 senior titles, 19 deputy senior titles, and 38 intermediate titles; 59 doctoral degrees and 31 master's degrees. The professional structure includes soil science, environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, land hydrology, atmospheric physics and atmospheric environment, geography, environmental simulation, and environmental biology.
