Brief Introduction
The Center is the major technical support unit of Ministry of Environmental Protection on biodiversity conservation and implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Various studies are conducted, including conservation of biodiversity and genetic resources, construction and management of nature reserves, biosafety management (e.g. policies, regulations, planning, and environmental biotechnology development), and supporting technologies for the implementation of relevant international conventions.

Research Tasks and Achievements
The Center has been conducting biodiversity researches since early 1990s. During the period of National 11th Five-Year Plan, the Center carried out more than 30 projects sponsored the National Key Science and Technology Research Programs, National Science and Technology Support Programs, Environmental Protection Commonweal Projects, and other projects funded by National Development and Reform Committee (NDRC), Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Environmental Protection, etc. It has provided important technical support for national environmental management.
The Center has composed over 10 environmental protection norms and standards since 2007, including the Guidelines of Normative Construction and Management of National Nature Reserves (trial version), Standard of Comprehensive Scientific Survey for Nature Reserves (trial version), Standard for Assessment of Regional Biodiversity, Technical Guidelines for Assessment of Environmental Risk of Alien Species, Guideline of Ecological Environment Safety Testing of Insect-resistant Transgenic Plants (trial version), Grading Standard of Biological Genetic Resources (trial version), Technical Guidelines for the Evaluation of Genetic Resources, etc. In addition, the Center organized the compilation of the first to fourth national reports on the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the first and second national reports on the implementation of the Biosafety Protocol.
Many experts of the Center participated in the negotiation of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Biosafety Protocol, the Nagoya ABS Protocol, the Nagoya–Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol On Liability And Redress Supplementary Compensation Liability and Remedy of Nagoya Protocol. In 2010, experts of the Center led to the development of the China National Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2011-2030), which was approved by the State Council and issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
