Brief  Introduction

The Center was founded in 1978. It has carried out the researches on ecological environmental impact and pollution prevention and control of agricultural chemicals, including pesticides, chemical fertilizers, plastic films and other agricultural chemicals. 

The Center is the technical support organization to the Ministry of Environmental Protection for environmental management and supervision of pesticides and agricultural chemicals. It is also a national environmental science and technology innovation base. 

The research fields of the Center include the environmental toxicology and ecological effect of toxic and hazardous chemicals, pesticide environmental safety and risk assessment, environmental management and risk prevention and control technology for specially concerned chemicals,  etc. which have provided an effective technical support for national registration and management of pesticides and chemicals.

Research Tasks and Achievements

For meeting with the national requirements on environmental management of pesticides and chemicals, the Center has successively accomplished more than 40 research projects sponsored by the National Key Science and Technology Program, High-Tech Research Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Nature Conservation Fund Program, Chinese Academy of Engineering Special Program, Science and Technology Projects of Environmental Protection Industry, National Environmental Standards Drafting and Revision Project and Jiangsu Provincial Nature Conservation Fund Projects, etc. A number of significant scientific achievements have been made.

The Center proposed the comments on banning or restricted use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), fipronil and some other pesticides which have seriously affected the environment. It has also put forward many management suggestions for the control of groundwater pollution caused by agricultural chemicals and the prevention of pesticides ecological impacts. It is also an authorized national institution for reviewing the ecological environment safety of pesticides and new chemical compounds applying for national registration. The Center has worked out the Guidelines for Testing of Pesticide Environmental Safety, Technical Guidelines for Environmentally Safe Usage of Pesticides, as well as other related environmental protection standards. The Center has also made significant achievements on researches for the identification of ecological toxicity and hazards of new chemical compounds, as well as techniques for risk assessment, risk prevention and control of environmental exposure.
