Brief  Introduction

The Center is one of the key research institutions of the State Environmental Protection Science and Technology Innovation System. The main responsibilities of the Center are: aiming at soil environmental issues and the national strategic needs of China, as well as the frontiers of international soil environmental science, and carrying out prospective and strategic research on applied theories and practical technologies for soil pollution prevention and remediation with the core mission to guarantee soil environmental safety. The Center provides scientific basis and technical support for decision-making on soil environmental protection. The main research areas of the Center include research on soil environmental criteria and standards, agricultural and regional soil environmental safety, risk assessment and remediation of contaminated sites, and soil and groundwater pollution control.

Research Tasks and Achievements

The Center is among the earliest research institutions involving in researches on soil pollution prevention and soil environmental management in China. It has successively carried out more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial projects involved in various programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology such as Key Fundamental Research Plan, National High-Tech Research Plan, and “The National 11th Five-Year Science and Technology Support Program”, as well as the scientific research programs of the Ministry of Environmental Protection. The Center has also accomplished many specialized soil research projects sponsored by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. All the researches have provided important technical supports for the national environmental management of soil.

The Center drafted the National Technological Norms for Soil Environmental Quality Evaluation, implemented the studies on the remediation and comprehensive control of contaminated soil. It completed the National Soil Pollution Investigation Report and other technical reports. The Center is a technical support institution for the national soil pollution investigation, which studied and put forward the framework suggestion to establish the standard system of soil environment protection in China. It also leads the drafting of a series of soil environmental protection standards. The Center was in charge of the revision of Soil Environment Quality Standard and drafting the Norms of Soil Environmental Quality Assessment Technology, Norms for Site Environment Investigation Technology and other industrial standards and norms. All the efforts made by the Center have significantly promoted the establishment of soil environmental standard system and enhanced soil environment management in China.
