The eleventh meeting of ad hoc open-ended inter-sessional working group on Article 8(j) and related provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was held from November 20 to 22 in Montreal, Canada. The meeting was attended by almost 300 delegates from Parties and non-Parties governments, indigenous people and local communities, the United Nations bodies and agencies, and non-governmental organizations. The Chinese government delegation which consists of representatives from Department of Nature and Ecology Conservation of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Department of Treaty and Law of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, and Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences. Dr. Zhao Fuwei took part in the delegation as the representative of NIES.
The representatives considered the following items and made relevant recommendations during this meeting: 1) implementation of the Aichi Target 18; 2) the draft recommendation on indigenous people and local community and post-2020 global biodiversity framework; 3) possible elements of work on the links between nature and culture in the post-2020 GBF; and 4) recommendations of the UNPFII. The outcomes will be reviewed by the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CBD that will be held at Kunming in 2020.
