On May 29, 2024, the fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity, held in Nairobi, Kenya, officially reviewed and approved the list of regional/subregional centers for science and technology cooperation (hereinafter referred to as "regional/subregional centers"). With the strong support of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, our institution actively sought and successfully applied for the Asian and Pacific Regional/Subregional Center for Science and Technology Cooperation under the Convention on Biological Diversity, becoming the only party institution selected in the Asia-Pacific region, further demonstrating China's responsibility and commitment as the President of COP15.
The regional/subregional centers are a new mechanism for science and technology cooperation approved under Resolution 15/8 of the fifteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. They aim to promote capacity building and development among parties within the region, and to jointly promote the effective implementation of the "Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework" at the regional and global levels.
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, NIES will fully leverage the core functions of the Asia-Pacific regional/subregional center for science and technology cooperation, capacity building, and knowledge dissemination, providing practical support to countries in the region and playing an active role in promoting the implementation of the "Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework" in the Asia-Pacific region. NIES will also use the international platform of the Asia-Pacific regional/subregional center to deeply publicize and promote China's experiences and practices in ecological civilization construction and biodiversity protection, contributing Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions to global biodiversity governance.
